Slave ships of history were said to stink. The smell was so bad the ships encountering slave ships at sea would often maneuver put the "Black birder as they were called" downwind. Slavers made great profits but were looked down upon by other merchant sailors. The dragons of the Northern Lair would not know this. They always lived the freest of lives. All except Dlanor and his life mate Jewel. Fox Fur only knew because she encountered the stink at the Bent Neck slave pens. Farley not the most original thinker on his best day wouldn't have even suspected it. Blake is just plain busy coordinating and it never dawned on him that the odor Farley encountered was a clue.
