Lets talk about Magical Misfit Portals. The mages can do portals but it is a spell that takes a few minutes prep. I established very early in the series where Gogo is making a portal and Lord Oppenhiemer is impatient at how long it takes.

Its kind of like having microphones too close together causing feedback. Of course Ogre Bob is the exception he is the master of portals. He can create portals close together instantly. But Ogre Bob is special.
